Abraham
Pontius, b. January 1849 in Germany
Abraham Pontius was born in Germany in 1849. He came to America
and settled in Memphis, Tennessee sometime around 1868. There he
married Lizzie Uhlm, who was born in Shelby County, Tennessee in January
1857 of German parents. The 1900 census says they had been married
21 years at that time. He was a Cigar Maker in Memphis, in
partnership with George Horn. Abraham died in 1915.
According to the 1900 census, Lizzie had 9 children, 6 of whom were
still living when the census was taken. These five are known:
Charles, born January 1881
Edward, born October 1884
Herbert B., born January 1890
Elizabeth, born June 1891
Irene, born November 1895
The 1880 census shows Abraham and "Elisa," probably short for Elisabeth,
from which Lizzie would be taken, married with one child living in the
household:
Hatty, daughter, age 7
It is assumed that Hatty is the eldest child of Abraham Pontius, as she
carries the same last name in the 1900 census.
Following is
an excerpt from Chronik Pontius-Familien by Rudi Pontius:

This
translates (approximately): Abraham Pontius, b. 1849, son of
Johannes Pontius of Berglangenbach and Katharina Albert of Mettweiler,
emigrated in 1881. Allegedly Abraham Pontius married Lizzie Uhlm
in America about 1881. She was born in 1857 in the American state
of Tennessee. From this marriage five children are well known.
Abraham Pontius died 02.08.1915 in Shelby, Tennessee. See family
